A House that Could Walk
The Elder's Last Word. The old man rose slowly, cleaning sand from his pants. He turned towards the little wood house as though taking a look at an old buddy.
" One day," he stated, "individuals gon' forget what this house really mean. They gon' think it was simply pretty wood and bright paint. However you-- you compose the story now. Make sure they keep in mind.".
He stopped briefly, letting the sea-grape leaves rustle in the stillness.
" This home is we. All the moving, all the making it through, all the dreams we pack up and bring from one place to the next. When you comprehend that, you comprehend Barbados.".
And with that, he left-- slow, stable, unhurried-- like a male who brought his own home inside him.
This story is part of the much deeper cultural journey explored in Rogues in Paradise and the RoguesCulture identity series.
